In 1918, the Great War drew to an end after taking the lives of nearly 61,000 Canadians while wounding an additional 172,000.
In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One (WWI), and with support from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Sandstone Theatre Company is proud to present ‘Mary’s Wedding’ at the Watermark Theatre in Rustico.
Written by Canadian playwright Stephen Massicotte, he describes the play as “a memorial to both the great war and great love.” The events in ‘Mary’s Wedding’ take place in a dream Mary Chalmers has the night before she is to be married. It begins during a thunderstorm where Mary meets Charlie Edwards taking shelter with his horse beside her barn.
With innocence and humour, the two discover a charming first love. But the world is collapsing into a brutal war. Together, they attempt to hide their love, galloping through the fields for a place and time where the fierce uncertainties of battle can’t find them.
‘Mary’s Wedding’ is directed by Paul Whelan, stage managed by Wallena Higgins, and produced by Grace Kimpinski. The cast features Jenna Marie and Adam Gauthier and together the two bring the epic, unforgettable story of love, hope, and survival in ‘Mary’s Wedding’ to life.
